RETAILERS
Indochino is the latest apparel retailer coming to King Street
King Street measures up when it comes to well-regarded boutique retailers
Havenât heard of Indochino? Founded as a menswear retailer in the mid-2000s in Victoria, B.C., it was one of the first to open bricks-and-mortar stores after initially operating online.
But theyâve never dotted the landscape with their stores like Menâs Wearhouse. And thatâs the point of this story.
A retail trade publication recently announced Indochino will be opening at 206 King Street this summer.
What makes them different?
Theyâre a pretty terrific operator. They made a big splash when they opened in the Georgetown neighborhood of DC in the fall of 2019.
âIndochino was founded on the belief that you don't need to spend a fortune on a custom wardrobe. By taking the premium made-to-measure experience direct to the consumer, weâve created a superior alternative to off-the-rack clothing, at ready-to-wear prices. This approach has enabled Indochino to become the largest exclusive made-to-measure apparel company in the world.â
Iâd heard about their unique sales model, so I visited shortly after opening. DC is definitely more corporate than Charleston, and even though the necktie was well on its way to being confined to the dustbin of history, I still wore suits.
First things first, I met with a tailor who took all kinds of measurements. I then sat with her and looked at a ton of fabric swatches and selected 2 for suits. Four weeks later, I was looking fresh.
Why Charleston?
The point is, theyâre an impressive retailer that offers an array of menswear and has since expanded into womenâs apparel. After years of opening stores, theyâre still only a little over 80 units.
Theyâre clearly selective. And they chose King Street.
Iâm speculating here, but Iâm sure their execs hear all the buzz about our town, including the latest accolade I wrote about last week. Theyâve likely done their homework and learned about the $13.2 billion the hospitality and tourism industry injects into the local economy. They maybe learned by the summer of 2021, King Street foot traffic was back to pre-pandemic levels.
Indochino ainât the only one
This is the latest in a string of high-profile, unique retailers to choose King Street as an expansion target. Just in the past 18 months or so, these retailers opened (or announced) on King Street:
Chapel Hats at 377-B King
State & Liberty , based in Ann Arbor, opened right before Christmas 2023 at 354 King
Hill House Home , based in New York, opened in the Spring at 145 King
Buck Mason, based in Venice CA, opened in the Spring at 263 King
Rag & Bone, based in Soho, opened in the Spring at 363 King
Alice & Olivia, also based in Soho, will open soon at 364 King
With King Street occupancy at 91%, retailers will soon be running out of space to lease.
STAT OF THE WEEK
đď¸ 7 million. Thatâs the number of visitors that walk King Street every year. According to the 2nd Quarter 2024 King Street Profile, just published by the City of Charleston, apparel makes up the largest concentration at 32%. |
