RESTAURANTS

Hemingway got inspiration here

Bar at The Select

Ernest Hemingway and F. Scott Fitzgerald were fast friends in their 20s and 30s. Each frequently gave the other advice on the craft they chose, one which proved maddening, tortuous and gratifying for both.

For Christ sake write and don’t worry about what the boys will say nor whether it will be a masterpiece nor what. I write one page of masterpiece to ninety one pages of shit. I try to put the shit in the wastebasket. You feel you have to publish crap to make money to live and let live.

Hemingway in a letter to Fitzgerald dated May 10, 1934

I’m speculating, but they may have exchanged such wisdom together at Le Select, a famed Paris brasserie they frequented in the 1920s.

Now we have a restaurant fashioned after that gathering place. Le Select opens today at 4:00 PM. It’s located in Greystar’s headquarters building downtown at 465 Meeting Street.

The space is beautifully designed, and no doubt will be heavily Instagrammed. The menu is described as new American and includes lobster and shrimp linguini, steak frites, braised short ribs, and roasted chicken with Southern succotash.

Coda del Pesce Chef To Open Italian Restaurant (Again) Downtown

Ken Vedrinksi will open Volpe’s late this year

Beachfront restaurants don’t usually enjoy the reputation Coda del Pesce does. Fast fare like pizza, hot dogs and ice cream typically grace seaside towns (and the occasional county fair-like stuff. Corn dog, anyone? 😋).

But James Beard award-nominated chef, Ken Vedrinksi, has been executing really well since he opened on Isle of Palms in May of 2013.

He’s also been cooking great Italian food for a long time. Some may remember the terrific Trattoria Luca which never reopened downtown after the pandemic.

Great news, though! He’s coming back downtown to a space at the corner of Rutledge Avenue and Doughty Street, on the edge of the Radcliffeborough neighborhood near MUSC.

He’ll be opening Volpe’s later this year in the space formerly operated by Laurel restaurant.

Female-Led Team Opens All My Exes In West Ashley

Bartenders prepare drinks at All My Exes in Avondale

Avondale is a really fun place to hang out. And it just got funner.

All My Exes is the name of a new cocktail bar that opened recently, and is owned and run by 2 ladies who entered the hospitality business at a young age.

Located in the former Oak Barrel Tavern space, the idea behind All My Exes was to provide a comfortable place for anyone, especially women, to hang out.

Steph Sievers and Jen Jackson formerly worked at Sullivan’s Fish Camp.

In America, the number of women-owned businesses has increased 114% over the past 2 decades.

Women start approximately 849 new businesses every single day in the United States and this number is increasing.

QUICK HITS

🍽️ Couple Behind Berkeleys Opens New Restaurant Downtown. The Archer opened in the former Gale space on Meeting Street.

🏞️ New waterfront park coming to Daniel Island. The State Ports Authority sold 9 parcels of land to Berkeley County to create this 115-acre park.

🏠 That little house emoji does no justice to a downtown home that sold for $9.7 million. Built in 2005, the home on Tradd Street is pretty new compared to its neighbors.
