Plus a coffee shop expands, beer meets oysters, and Parker Milnerās 2024 top meals
Happy Friday morning, Charleston! Last week, I posted a poll on your favorite barbecue spot, and mentioned Iād offer my opinion. Thanks to all of you who participated! Hereās your Top 3:
Lewis Barbecue - 54%
Home Team BBQ - 23%
Rodney Scottās Whole Hog BBQ - 14%
I have to qualify my choice(s). When I want brisket, itās gotta be Lewis. But I donāt want brisket all the time. So when Iām looking for a broader menu, I go to Home Team BBQ on Sullivans. Kinda tracks with what yāall like?
No congrats are on offer this week, as nobody took a guess in our āWhere Are Weā segment last week. Our photo was Saint James Episcopal Church on James Island. Weāre on hiatus this week, but weāre profiling something different I think youāre gonna like. šš¼šš¼

DEVELOPMENT
The Fresh Market, The Powerhouse & The Development Map
Will The Fresh Market EVER open in Mount Pleasant?
I wrote back in August about how The Fresh Market, a Greensboro-based specialty grocer, had taken over the Bowman Place Shopping Center lease that Lidl signed.
That was a follow-up to a September 2023 Post & Courier article which reported that news!
Until I learned about TFM being an agenda item on the January 29 Mount Pleasant Design Review Board meeting, I was skeptical they were coming.
They submitted revisions to their building drawings so thereās still hope!
The iconic Powerhouse property built in 1909 at the former Navy Base in North Charleston is on the market for $6.5 million.
I was surprised to learn that the developers of Navy Yard Charleston put an iconic building on the market.
Itās a well-heeled development team behind the redevelopment of the former Navy base. With complex projects of this scale, most developers want to control as many aspects as they can.
Usually to enhance āplacemakingā, particularly since developments like this are years-long in the making.
The team has spent the past few years trying to convert The Powerhouse building into a live-performance hall. They're now looking to sell it to a buyer with a similar vision.
Woodlock Capital created a map profiling development projects on the peninsula
I happened upon a cool map on LinkedIn this week. Normally ācoolā and āLinkedInā donāt mesh in the same sentence.
In this case they did.
Woodlock Capital is a commercial real estate brokerage and investment company thatās active and growing in Charleston. They put together a clean, simple Google map showing apartment, hotel and office developments in Charleston.
I know one of their principals, Elliot Calhoun, who I recall told me heās also a Maryland guy.
We spoke last week and Elliot told me about a very interesting project heās involved in on the peninsula. I canāt share more than that, but itāll be the first of its kind in the region.
I think yāall will be excited. Stay tuned.
PLEASE ADOPT ME!

HOSPITALITY
Oak Steakhouse Marks 20 Years Just As Hotel Richemont Readies For Opening
Hotel Richemont is looking to open in late March at 93 Society St., near King Street.
Iāve written before about The Indigo Road Hospitality Group. Even though they donāt need my help promoting their restaurant and lodging empireāthereās over 30 restaurants and hotels in cities such as ours, DC, Greenville, Georgetown, Atlanta, Asheville, Raleigh and CharlotteāI have a soft spot for them.
I love the story of its founder, Steve Palmer. He struggled for years with alcoholism and wrote a beautiful book about his path to sobriety, thanks to the love and support of friends in the restaurant industry.
Itās a journey I share with SteveāI stopped drinking on December 8, 2015.
I say this all the time: Iām not anti-alcohol. Alcohol is not bad, itās just bad for me. Iāve been very careful along my journey about not projecting my sobriety on the company.
Indigo Road expanded rapidly over the past few years, and has its share of successes like O-Ku, Brasserie Banque, Indaco, and The Kingstide.
It seems, though, Mr. Palmer is particularly proud of Oak Steakhouse, which recently celebrated its 20th anniversary. When he first got involved as a partner 5 years after its opening, Broad Street was sleepy.
An established neighborhood was losing luster to a newish, sexy and emerging part of town called Upper King Street.
Palmer credits the hiring of chef Jeremiah Bacon, who later made his bones at The Macintosh, for supercharging Oak Steakhouseās emergence.
Oak Steakhouse remains a premier dining experience in Charlestonāif you get to 20 years and still open and excelling, youāre doing something right.
Now Indigo Road is readying the opening of Hotel Richemont, a 25-room boutique hotel which will include what looks like a pretty cool restaurant named Two Bit Club.
Itās a Vietnamese restaurant offering an elevated fare of Southeast Asian cuisine with vintage decor from the 1940s and 1950s.
